Achieving Your Fitness Goals, One Step at a Time
Teacher: Gitanjali Borkar, owner, G Moves LLC
Location: KCDC Pop-Up Learning Space
Date: Oct. 19, 2015
On Monday, Oct. 19, “Achieving Your Fitness Goals, One Step at a Time” became the first class in KCDC’s new Rhode Island Avenue pop-up space. Gitanjali Borkar, aka G, whipped attendees’ minds, bodies, and souls into shape by motivating them to draft, visualize, and achieve their fitness goals step by step. According to G, only 3 percent of the population actually writes out their fitness goals, so the class was joining an elite group.
G encouraged students to think carefully about what achieving their goals would look like. “Measure where you are and where you want to be, then determine that delta,” pushed G, who helped the class set up milestones for their individual calorie-burning, muscle-toning, heart-healthy goals. She explained how to write SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound), proving that your favorite part of your employer’s performance review process can actually be applied in real life. Students shared a few personal goals with the class: “Fit into a favorite skirt,” “exercise three to four times per week,” “lose five pounds in six weeks.”
In the process of meeting your goals, G admitted, you may have a slip or two — known to some of us as that moment when you’ve eaten the entire carton of ice cream instead of the few scoops you intended. The important thing is to not “let a slip turn into a slide!” (Translation: Make your next meal a healthy one or push a little harder during your next workout.) It’s all about developing good habits over time, rather than making painstaking sacrifices to reach your goal.
Gitanjali reminded students that they should be excited about their goal endpoints and look forward to rewarding themselves after achieving a goal. No, that doesn’t mean scarfing down another carton of ice cream; a reward could be a new piece of jewelry or a pair of shoes. Finally, G encouraged the class to celebrate every milestone and to apply their new goal-setting methodology to all facets of life.
