What did you do during this class?
We sampled four beers and learned how the various ingredients, such as hops and yeast, determine each beer’s unique flavor.
What was the most surprising thing you learned?
There is a social history behind many of the types of beers we tasted. A grisette has a lower alcohol content and stronger flavor, and was traditionally drunk by factory workers, whereas a saison, a more acidic beer made using fruit, was traditionally drunk by farm workers.
What did you learn that you can put into practice immediately?
I discovered a new favorite beer, Birds of Passage. It has a crisp, fruity taste, despite containing no fruit.
