Outside the Franklin School, which won’t be abandoned for much longer … oh wait, it will.

This class will lead you on an exploration of the derelict schoolhouses that litter the city. Through these buildings’ histories, we’ll learn about the development of public education; the childhoods of local celebrities; and the complexities of race relations in the D.C. education system, from the segregated schools of the early 1900s to the recent controversial closings under Michelle Rhee and Kaya Henderson.

Disclaimer: Although we will point out abandoned schoolhouses, tell you stories about their former lives, and do some hardcore peeking through the windows (if we can), we will not be going inside the buildings themselves.
