After These Messages: Dissecting Ads on TV
From its very inception, television has presented an additional vehicle for advertisers to hawk their wares. Sometimes subliminal, but more often overt, TV entertainment is constantly interrupted/sponsored/defined by “messages” intended to $ell, $ell, $ell.
This show emphasizes audience discussion, while utilizing content from the 1980s/1990s to explore how advertising conventions (air times, scripts, gender stereotypes) and exhibition conventions (editing, “brought to you by…,” promotional “specials”) have evolved.
