“Arabic,” in Arabic. (Art by Luke Atkinson)

We can’t teach you Arabic in 90 minutes, so let’s focus on what you already know — or think you do. In this class, we will look at Arabic buzzwords you might have read in the newspaper or heard on the radio. What’s the difference between a hijaab, a niqaab, and a burqa? What does “Al-shabaab” really mean? Why do people say “Allahu Akbar?” We’ll dig deep into the roots and emotional resonance of these and other terms, and improve cross-cultural competence along the way.
