Seriously love “Serial”? Want to experiment with audio like “RadioLab” does? Learn the basics of audio storytelling in this three-class workshop.

Please plan to attend all three sessions. The classes are cumulative. And if you don’t go to all three, you’re taking a slot away from someone who would.

You’ll need to bring a smartphone, a laptop with a microphone, or a digital recorder to class.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have produced a short audio piece.

Thursday, Feb. 5: Audio Storytelling Elements
In this introduction to the various forms of audio storytelling, you’ll listen to samples from audio books, radio dramas, NPR reporting, creative non-fiction, and other genres. The class will cover the elements that create a piece: narration, music, ambience, foley work (sound effects), and more. And we’ll brainstorm ideas for your class project.

Thursday, Feb. 12: Tech Basics
Here, you’ll learn the basic skills needed to record and edit audio work. You’ll get acquainted with recording equipment such as digital recorders and smartphone apps, and with Audacity editing software. After this class, you’ll begin recording and editing your piece.

Thursday, Feb. 19: Editing Workshop
Bring your project and a laptop to this extended workshop session. Peter, the instructor, will provide guidance and technical support.

This class is presented in partnership with DC Public Library.
