Civics 101

Since last November’s election, many people have felt lost and overwhelmed by the political situation. There are so many different calls to action and ways to get involved, but not as much information about what it all means.
Michelle, a policy staffer in Congress, will give an overview of how our government is supposed to function. She will focus on checks and balances; separation of powers; and the different roles played by local, state, and federal governments. We’ll then discuss how to productively get involved to make a difference on the issues that are most important to you.

Michelle McGrain works as a legislative assistant for Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) and previously worked as a legislative assistant for Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD), the longest-serving woman in congressional history. Michelle has worked on a broad range of domestic policy issues, and her top accomplishments include bringing the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument into the National Park System, coordinating Democratic strategy around closing the gender wage gap, and preserving affordable housing in Baltimore and its suburbs. Outside of work, Michelle is an active member of Jews United for Justice and served as a volunteer leader on the DC Paid Family Leave Campaign. A native Marylander, Michelle currently lives in Mount Pleasant. She holds a B.A. and an M.P.P from the University of Maryland.
