Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?” is a collage by English artist Richard Hamilton.

Collage is not just for grade-school art class, nor is it “just” a craft. Artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque incorporated collage into their work, and it’s widely considered a modernist technique.

Collage is also for anyone who loves viewing and making art, especially those who may be intimidated by charcoal or paint brushes, but still feel the curiosity and desire to create.

In this class, we will look at examples of collage in modern art. Then you’ll choose an image to inspire your own collage, which you’ll make on-the-spot with found materials.

Please bring scissors if you can. If you have materials you know you’d like to use in your collage, or an image you’d like to base it on, please bring them, too.

This class is presented in partnership with DC Public Library.
