Why are some books easier to read? Why do some posters seem to speak more eloquently? Explore these questions in this class.

We’ll start with an introduction to typography and lettering, using examples from today and from the past to examine key ideas. Next comes a hands-on workshop in which we’ll look closely at the shapes of letters and experiment with methods for making surprising, expressive type.

The background material is aimed at people without a design background. The exercises can serve anyone, from curious laypersons to practitioners looking for variety. The class’ working methods are entirely analog: no computers needed or wanted.

There will be a $5 materials fee.
