From Funkstown to Foggy Bottom: A Historical Walking Tour

date Saturday, 28 February 2015 time 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

👤 Allison Arlotta 🏢 George Washington University

Past

From industrial port to urban campus, Foggy Bottom has gone through many changes in character (and name, as it was once called Funkstown after founder Jacob Funk). Now home to George Washington University, the neighborhood is a special mix of old and new.

Join us for a lively walking tour of the former Funkstown. You’ll learn about alley dwellings of the late 1800 and how a gas company helped turn a country town into a metropolis — and perhaps you’ll hear a presidential ghost story or two. Along the way, we’ll touch on the issues of race, class, and urban development that continue to influence our city today.

Please meet inside the Marvin Center, across from the admissions office.
