Inoculating oak logs with shiitake mushrooms is something one might do if one starts a farm.

A few years ago, a group of young, city-dwelling dreamers had a grand idea: to create a destination in the countryside where they could grow clean food, host friends, learn new skills, promote artists, and foster a healthier lifestyle.

Last year, those dreamers — now known as Liberty Root — pooled their savings and purchased a farmhouse and 15 acres of land in Wild ‘n’ Wonderful West Virginia, 100 miles from the city. Liberty Root seeks to bridge the gap between farms and urban environments, and provide a farm-to-table food-growing experience for an ever-expanding community of enthusiasts.

So … how do you start a farm? They’ll tell you.
