I Can’t Draw and So Can You: Garden Edition
Everyone can draw — we do it from a young age, and drawing is tightly linked to our process of understanding the world. Children don’t say “I can’t draw” — instead, they point to their drawings and say “This is a dog” or “This is a jar of peanut butter” or “This is a girl with a hat and a belly button.”
But as we get older, people divide themselves into those who can and can’t draw. This class will prove that this is a mistake! Doodling, drawing, and cartooning is for everyone.
Your teachers will guide you through two hands-on drawing and doodling exercises that are inspired by our garden setting, and you’ll have the opportunity to share your work with others and discuss different styles. Come to this class if you doodle, miss doodling, or if you have moments in the day when you need to express a feeling or idea but the words elude you.

Hannah Dean works for the National Park Service as a geographic information specialist and lands planner, but makes time every day to draw. She mainly works in pen and ink, but sometimes gets the opportunity to do hand painted cookies and cakes with @paisleyfig, a local D.C. bakery.
Sonia Booth is a museum educator. She currently works as a coordinator of programs at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and before she moved to D.C. she gave tours of the Boston Massacre site in Massachusetts. As part of the Knowledge Commons DC organizing team, she helps wrangle volunteers, facilitators, and classes. Her favorite fruit is cherimoya.
