Past

In the span of a generation, indie rock has catalyzed immense change within our culture. The ways in which many of us evaluate music, adapt a cultural persona, and modify our personal politics have been affected by the growth of the genre.

But what are the social and economic roots of indie music? How did indie break into mainstream culture in the first place? Why is it so hard to define a style that seems so all-encompassing? And what does the future hold for the indie movement?

Using multimedia and archival resources, we will trace the evolution of indie rock to answer these questions and, in the process, find a broader perspective on the nature of 21st-century pop culture.
