Locks have meaning: They symbolize status, define social and physical boundaries, and discriminate between the permitted and the barred. Lock picking subverts every physical, mental, and societal value that locks represent. It is for this reason that lock picking, in its modern context, has been controversial since the Great Lock Controversy of 1851.

Today, lock picking is alive and well — and still controversial. Discover how to — and why you should — pick locks. In this class, you’ll learn a brief history of locks and lock picking and try your hand at the craft in a guided, hands-on workshop.
