Lock Picking
Locks have meaning: They symbolize status, define social and physical boundaries, and discriminate between the permitted and the barred. Lock picking subverts every physical, mental, and societal value that locks represent. It is for this reason that lock picking, in its modern context, has been controversial since the Great Lock Controversy of 1851.

David Knauer takes things apart and typically can’t put them back together. Locks are simple enough for him to understand and cheap enough to replace, so this is his most successful hobby. Lock picking was the one thing he understood when he attended DEF CON, the world’s largest underground hacking conference. He’s the president of the D.C. chapter of The Open Organisation of Lockpickers and has taught at hacker conferences, Maker Faires, the White House, and the Pentagon.
