Mapping the D.C. Food Community: Introduction to GIS

date Thursday, 16 May 2013 time 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

👤 Florita Gunasekara 🏢 The Hive 2.0

Past

In this workshop, you’ll learn basic geographic information systems (GIS) skills by mapping some of D.C.’s many community gardens, using a dataset provided by the teacher. The class will map the spatial distribution of gardens, the foods they grow, the origins of the seeds, who owns the land, and other interesting data points. You’ll leave the workshop with your own map of the D.C. food community. The class is designed for those with no GIS experience.

You’ll need a laptop (and charger). Please download and install QGIS, the leading open-source GIS software, here: http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download.
