Using Meditation to Connect With Our Emotions and Resilience

date Monday, 8 July 2019 time 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

👤 Eliza Barclay, Jeff Colombe 🏢 cove Dupont

Past

We humans have all kinds of ways of protecting ourselves from harm and seeking favorable things like comfort, safety, food, and reproduction. As intensely social creatures, we also have innate and conditioned ways of promoting our social selves. All of this gives us rich emotional lives, providing the basis for us to enjoy happiness, and to suffer loss and risk.

In the first hour of this class, Eliza Barclay will introduce the practice of mindfulness meditation and lead a guided session of basic meditation, followed by a brief discussion of the experience.

In the second hour, neuroscientist and long-time meditator Jeff Colombe will give a talk on the science of meditation, emotions, and resilience. The talk will focus human emotions and their pivotal role in our mental health, and how meditation can help build our resilience against “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,” as Hamlet put it.
