“Arabic,” in Arabic. (Art by Luke Atkinson)

This class will cover the basics of Moroccan Arabic, which is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) tinged with French, Spanish, English, and Tamazight. You’ll learn enough to navigate a bustling souk in Marrakech, or to enjoy a meal at a fancy riad in Fes.

Knowledge of Arabic script is not a prerequisite; we’ll be employing the fascinating English orthography (aka spelling system) that Moroccans use every day to text and Facebook each other. We’ll even learn a few words of Tamazight, colloquially known as Berber.

Take this class if you’d like a leg up on your next trip to Morocco, if you want to impress your date at a Moroccan restaurant, or to explore the differences between Moroccan Arabic and other dialects.
