The Mysteries of the 1040 Form and Other Tax Basics
Taught by three certified tax volunteers, this class will cover the history of tax forms and explain how to fill them out. We’ll provide two hypothetical tax return situations and we will work as a class to fill out the returns. (Spoiler alert: There will be some tricky tax credits/deductions/dependents to maneuver through.) You’ll learn the intricacies of the tax system (and the intention of its original policies) and uncover the fun — yes, we said fun! — and enigmatic aspects of the tax return process.

Erica Zimmerman is a statistician by day, and a hobbyist always. In her other free time, she loves yoga, concerts, and finding the best tacos in D.C. Her goal is to always be the most interesting guest at a dinner party.
Gabrielle Sims graduated with an accounting degree from Howard University. She is currently studying for the CPA Exam. Gabrielle is also a volunteer with One Brick, where she serves as an event coordinator.
Michelle Kuchinsky is a volunteer tax preparer with Community Tax Aid and a community outreach organizer for Knowledge Commons DC. During the day, you might find her conducting research on meat processing plants for the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. Other interests include cheese, clothing swaps, Shabbat dinners, and Settlers of Catan.
