Acupuncture, the ancient healing art that’s been practiced for thousands of years in China, has achieved mainstream clinical and financial success in the modern West. But what is acupuncture? Does it work? How did the superficial insertion of needles into the body come to be declared by the World Health Organization to be a successful treatment for numerous conditions, including lower-back pain, headaches, and rheumatoid arthritis?

This class will explore the theory and practice of acupuncture through discussion, guided qi gong (energy cultivation, similar to tai chi), and acupressure. We’ll go over some basic principles of Chinese medicine and some explanations from a Western scientific perspective. Bring your questions and experiences!

Note: There is no needling involved in this class (information about acupuncture treatment will be available, though). We will do an acupressure activity that involves massage at specific acupuncture points on the body.
