Pop Art Sculpture

The Pop Art movement began in the late 1950s in America and Britain, as a reaction to the economic boom and subsequent consumer culture that took hold of the two countries.
Although this class will focus specifically on the three Pop Art sculptures on view at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden (by Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Robert Indiana), we’ll also explore the art movement and its philosophies through stories about Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg, to name just a few.

Claire Howard, a Virginia native, has degrees in English, art history, and arts marketing. In 2013, she taught her first KCDC class, on the Dada art movement. She’s worked for commercial galleries, at museums, and in public relations. She loves the idea of bringing people together and providing a context for communication and creativity.
Elena Goukassian has been a KCDC organizer since 2011. She has an MA in German and European Studies from Georgetown and now works as an arts writer, reporter, and editor.
