Pragmatism, Postmodernism, and Cultural Relativity
How does language correspond to the world, and how can we judge if it does so correctly? Are individuals products of their societies or are societies products of individuals? Are there such things as moral or political truths?
The short answers are: It doesn’t, we can’t, both, and no. Philosophers such as Richard Rorty drew out the radical implications of these insights, but many still cringe at labels like cultural and moral relativity. This class will make the case that postmodern relativism isn’t so threatening, and is in fact quite a healthy worldview. Then we’ll engage in a robust discussion about whether or not you agree.
