Protests, Politics and Penalty Kicks: The 2014 World Cup
The 2014 World Cup in Brazil is, simply put, one of the biggest events anywhere, ever — a month-long geopolitical showcase that virtually the entire globe will passionately follow.
“A football team represents a way of being — a culture,” said Michel Platini, president of the Union of European Football Associations. “Show me how you play,” wrote Uruguayan journalist Eduardo Galeano, “and I’ll tell you who are.” Others have called soccer the closest thing we have to a universal language.
But can we really learn about a community, culture, or country through its soccer style? Why is soccer so internationally popular, yet struggles in the U.S.? And — maybe most importantly — does the World Cup even matter? Both frenzied fans and soccer skeptics are welcome.
