Cybersecurity has become headline news, and recent hacking attacks have revealed confidential internal information at Sony, credit card data from millions of Target shoppers, and private celebrity smartphone photos. In media coverage, technical security is often presented as black and white: Individuals are either totally vulnerable and clueless, or they are super secure hackers.

The reality is that online security is a spectrum of gray and you do not have to be a cryptographic savant (or even know what that means!) to protect yourself. This class will provide you with simple steps — covering topics like software updates, encrypted web browsing, and passwords — that you can take to make yourself more secure, regardless of your level of digital literacy.

This is the first class in a three-part series that includes Security 201: Encrypt Your Data and Mobile SecurityLaptops are not required, but you may bring one if you’d like.

This class is presented in partnership with DC Public Library.
