Your teacher demonstrates proper tree-hugging technique.

As a meeting place of north and south, piedmont and coastal plain, and people from all over the world, D.C. is home to a vast diversity of tree species. How many of them can you identify?

Join writer and tree lover Gabriel Popkin for a tour of our city’s many interesting trees. We’ll start in a Northwest neighborhood, to see how historical and natural factors have influenced the trees that grow on our streets and in our yards. We’ll then walk through Rock Creek Park to observe some of the trees that live in our region’s native forests. We’ll talk about the natural history of trees and how factors such as invasive species and changing cultural values have influenced what trees grow in this area today.

You’re invited to share your own knowledge about trees. Dress for the weather and be prepared for a bit of hiking. (Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.)

The rain date for this class is the next day, Sunday, May 10 at 1 pm.
