Sticks over Bics: Basics of Bow Drill Friction Fire

Humans made fires long before lighters and matches, and you’ll practice creating fire by friction in this interactive class. In addition to hands-on instruction, you’ll learn about fire essentials, basic knife safety, the components of a bow drill friction fire set and tinder bundle, plant and tree selection for materials, and general lessons from the field.
Making fire by friction is challenging and success is never guaranteed, but you will see at least one fire made! You’ll also walk away with most of the elements of a friction fire kit and an understanding of the fundamental concepts that you can refine in the field.
Bring a notebook, a pen, and a camera, if you have them. This class is for ages 18+.

Joseph Ziobro is an outdoor enthusiast with interests in backpacking, wild edibles, flora and fauna identification, and bushcraft. While earning a graduate degree in environmental sciences, Joseph foraged for fungi, discovered the interconnectedness of ecological systems, and devoted himself to the study of plants and trees. Now that he works for the US EPA, Joseph spends his free time in the forests surrounding D.C. practicing skills in natural cordage, friction fire, primitive pottery, and wild edible identification. Joseph also maintains two small but productive urban gardening plots in D.C.
Matt Colombo is deeply interested in sustainable living and connecting with that which sustains him. He practices and teaches primitive/wilderness skills and self-sufficiency skills. He has taught food fermentation, acorn processing, and friction fire classes with KCDC and looks forward to sharing more knowledge and experience in 2017!
