Super Smash Bros. for Beginner and Intermediate Players

Perhaps you’ve watched your friends play the video game Super Smash Bros. and had no idea what’s going on, or maybe your character always dies the moment you pick up the controller. If so, fear no more!
We’ll start with a brief introduction on how to play for those of you who are novices, and then you’ll get hands-on practice. You’ll leave knowing (a) the basic controls, (b) how to get back to stage when knocked off, (c) how to use shields and dodging, and (d) how to pull off an effective smash attack. Those of you who know a little bit more about the game are welcome, too, to help coach novice players and to work on building a few more advanced skills.
The material covered in the class is intended for novice and intermediate players. We’ll be in the back room of the restaurant/bar Red Derby, so feel free to grab food and drinks during the class.

Instructor
Anthony Ashford is a lifelong gamer. He received a bachelor’s in media studies and is the founder and executive coordinator for Gaming + Social Justice, an organization that brings gamers together to address social injustice in gaming spaces. He hosted many gaming events while in college at Ball State University, including a large-scale entertainment event at a conference for Midwest residence hall leadership. Through Gaming + Social Justice, Anthony has hosted over 20 gaming-related events in D.C. in the last 3 years. He’s followed the video game series Super Smash Bros. since the Super Smash Bros. Melee release on the Gamecube and has played hundreds of hours of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii. He’s also clocked in a significant amount of hours in the newest release, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Anthony hopes to use this session to level the playing field for new and veteran Smash players.
