Tradecraft and Countersurveillance for the Amateur

date Saturday, 20 July 2013 time 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

How do intelligence officers obtain information from a contact without giving away the contact’s identity? How do counterintelligence teams follow a spy? How could resistance workers meet in secret? This class looks at some simple techniques from the intelligence officer’s toolbox, including dead letter boxes, foot surveillance and countersurveillance, and the use of go-betweens.

You’ll try these skills out on the street, using exercises based on ones leaked from the UK Security Service (aka MI5) and the UK Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). This is a practical class: You’ll be divided into teams and assigned tasks that you must keep secret from the other students. We only meet as a full class later, for a debrief and further practice.
