A growing number of murals adds color and interest to U Street’s outdoor spaces, but that’s not all these diverse public artworks do!
Join artist and author Cory Stowers on a walking tour of 12 murals throughout the Shaw and U Street neighborhoods to learn about the historical, social, and political significance of (un)commissioned public art, along with the unique styles of the local artists and cooperatives that created them.

Cory Stowers is an award-winning multi-disciplinary creative living in Washington, DC and working in the fields of visual art, music, film, scholarly writing, and education. Hailing originally from the world of graffiti art, Cory co-founded the 2DK L.A.B., a hip-hop collective that’s hosted free graffiti art classes and contributed to more than fifty public mural commissions over the past twenty years. He has been honored with multiple fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and used one of them to create the country’s first interactive public mural, which uses an augmented reality app to bring complementary audio and video content to viewers’ mobile devices. Cory currently serves as the associate director of DC Murals.
