Satisfy We: User Experience Design for the Wannabe UXD Professional

Multipart class

date First meeting: Monday, 16 May 2016 time 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

👤 Kaytee Nesmith 🏢 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library

Past

In this hands-on, five-part course, you will become familiar with the fundamentals of user experience design by conceptualizing a mobile app and taking it through the design process—learning sketching, prototyping and user-testing techniques along the way. No previous experience with design is necessary, nor are any programming skills required. (We will not be building functional apps.) Bring your laptop, if you have one.

Students are expected to attend all sessions.

Week 1 (Exploration)

During the first week, you’ll choose an existing app or website to redesign throughout the course. We will focus on defining user experience design and exploring various techniques through both case studies and hands-on activities.

Week 2 (Design Techniques)

This week will focus on specific design techniques, with an emphasis on better understanding the idea of “iterative design” and creating what’s known as a “minimum viable product,” or MVP. You’ll define and communicate the scope of your project and ultimately create a prototype.

Week 3 (Usability and Final Presentation)

Understanding your users’ behaviors and being able to pinpoint and work through specific problems with a design is an integral part of user experience design. We’ll focus on understanding areas of improvement for your project through user research and usability testing techniques.

You’ll present your project to the class, focusing on how to successfully communicate your design decisions. Since the class is so condensed time-wise, it’s absolutely expected that there will be projects that look and feel incomplete—and that’s perfectly fine! The goal is to get you more acquainted with the overall design process.
