The lauburu is a symbol of Basques, often used in tombs and in houses.

Basque, or euskara, is an endangered language with, by some estimates, only around 600,000 speakers. It’s spoken mostly in the Basque Country (Euskal Herria) in the Pyrenees and on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean (officially Spain and France), but also appears in the U.S. and other regions where Basques have migrated during their long history. Basque is an isolate, meaning it has no known related languages. A very old language, it developed before speakers of Indo-European languages arrived in Western Europe.

This interactive class will teach the basics of Basque language, history, and culture. Get ready for some Basque karaoke!

This class is presented in partnership with Petworth Citizen & Reading Room.
