The lauburu is a symbol of Basques, often used in tombs and in houses.

Basque, or euskara, is an endangered language with only around 600,000 speakers. It’s spoken mostly in the Basque Country, Euskal Herria, in the Pyrenees and on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean (officially Spain and France). The language also appears in the U.S. and other regions where Basques have migrated during their long history. Basque is an isolate, meaning it has no known related languages, and dates back to before the Indo-European migrations.

This interactive class will teach the basics of the Basque language, including expressions and useful utterances such as “ongi etorri!” and “gose naiz!”

This class is presented in partnership with Petworth Citizen & Reading Room.
