A Beginner’s Guide to Social Media in China
You’ve probably heard of the Great Firewall of China. But even in a country where Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram are off-limits to the average Internet user, such barriers haven’t stopped grassroots social media, political memes, and online activism from taking off.
This lecture-style class will provide an introduction to:
- The most popular social networking sites in mainland China, and what makes them special;
- Viral memes and catchphrases that emerged in response to issues such as social inequality, political strife, and censorship;
- How the Chinese government has used social media to connect with citizens in surprising ways.
