Demons in the Microscope II: Antibiotics and the Great War

date Thursday, 29 October 2015 time 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

👤 Dexter Sumner 🏢 KCDC Pop-Up Learning Space

Past

Serving on opposite sides during World War I, two young medics became frustrated by the number of people they saw fall to streptococcal infections, gangrene, and tuberculosis. Learn how a German, Gerhard Domagk, and Alexander Fleming, a Scot, worked to resolve the medical problems they saw on the battlefield — caused by “demons in the microscope” (aka germs) — with world-changing results. Gas warfare, too, contributed to the development of modern medicine; we’ll talk about how.
